- The Evenflo EveryStage DLX All-in-One Convertible Car Seat could serve your child for their entire car-seat phase of life: it accommodates kids between four and 120 pounds.
- This is the easiest car seat I have ever installed thanks to its hand-cranked ratchet system that does the hard work for you.
There’s a good chance that my 17-month-old daughter Scarlett will sit in her EvenFlo car seat until she’s in fourth grade, more than eight years from now. That’s because, as the name of the seat makes clear, the Evenflo EveryStage DLX All-in-One Convertible Car Seat can be altered and modified well into the elementary years to fit toddlers, teenagers, kindergarteners and kids. Indeed, thanks to its maximum capacity of 120 pounds, it could even support many adults in its final booster configuration.
Admittedly that name is something of a mouthful, so in a minute we’ll break it down piece by piece. But long story short, with my kids I have now used six or seven car seats and I have tested many more for product research purposes, and this is the one my wife and I have chosen as the daily seat of our daughter. Probably that alone tells you so much, but I have so much more to say about this thing.
The first thing worth noting about the Evenflo EveryStage DLX is the ease of installation (which will be my shorthand name for it to continue). Anyone with small children knows that the fight is real: installing car seats with frozen software and bonked head rage is a frustration right up there. What’s that thing? I pulled it out of our primary family car in one day and put it in an Uber, retrieved it again at the airport and, after a very long flight, placed the seat in our rental in France again. The car seat was perhaps the only non-stressful part of the journey.
And not only is installing the seat using the latch system easy from a technical point of view, it also requires minimal strength for the most secure connection I’ve yet been able to create in a car seat.

HOW IT WORK
The Evenflo EveryStage DLX connects the standard clips you know and probably hate to the latch system anchors. But use the “Easy Click” ratchet system to tighten the belt and secure the seat, you don’t need to use brute strength and pure rage, crank a little handle back and forth to tighten the seat. I can secure the seat without feeling like I’m making any real effort to generate leverage, either, without getting into an awkward position.
You can easily adjust the seat angle in the rear-facing configuration to accommodate support needs based on a child’s age, while myriad inserts and adjustable backrest and head support provide a comfortable and safe custom fit. Forward-looking, the chair is conveniently height-adjusted for ever-growing kids, and with all attachments removed, it accommodates children until they no longer need a car seat.
If you have ever installed and adjusted a car seat before, you will have this one mastered in minutes, and you will never want to use another.
The cons to consider
This is a large, massive, rigid car seat. I can get the seat-mounted behind me in our full-size SUV or mid-size crossover and ride with my seat where my 6-foot-2-inch frame likes it, but in smaller cars it would be difficult for me to accommodate Evenflo EveryStage DLX behind me. (In fact, we had to put it in one rental behind my wife who was sitting in the passenger seat cross-legged.)
If you have a compact car and want a shotgun passenger, this seat may not work. Likewise, if you will be challenged by moving around an extra heavy seat, consider a lighter option. And at $209.99, the convertible car seats are at the pricier end of the spectrum, though others cost well over $300.
Another option to consider (The Graco Extend2Fit Convertible Car Seat)
Once installed, the Graco Extend2Fit Convertible Car Seat is as easy to adjust as the EvenFlo, and it enjoys excellent safety ratings and reviews. It costs about $100 less than the EveryStage, but it only accommodates kids up to 65 pounds.
Also, it lacks that amazing installation system and the safety sensor, but most car seats don’t have those two gems, either.
Is an Evenflo EveryStage DLX Car Seat worth your money?
Yes, yes. Remarkably, yes. As I said earlier, this is my wife’s car seat and I use it with my baby every day of the week. After reviewing so many different car seats for work and using so many throughout both my child’s lives at the moment I find it a pinnacle product: it does everything in terms of safety, and it has the functionality I’ve never seen incorporated in any other equivalent option.
Pros: Amazingly easy to install, sensor alerts parents to potential hazards, can be used for up to a decade (depending on child’s size)
Cons: Large and bulky, higher-priced than many comparable options
